Frequently Asked Questions

Save yourself some time and a service call with answers to
common questions we’ve had over the years…

How often should I get my HVAC equipment serviced?

Your HVAC systems should receive regular maintenance, with service prior to the start of a heating/cooling season.  A/C tune-up in the spring.  Heat Pump / Furnace tune-up in the early fall.

How often should I change my furnace filter?

The filter should be replaced approximately every 3-4 months based on usage.  The more frequent the filter is changed…the better your indoor air quality.

Do I need a programmable thermostat?

The short answer…YES!  A programmable thermostat helps to regulate your HVAC systems more efficiently, saving you time and money in the long run.

Should I consider HVAC zoning?

Depending on the size of your home it can be a great choice.  Zoning will allow you increased control over areas that might only get part-time usage.  In turn, this can make your home more efficient, saving you money on your utility bills.

What is the optimal thermostat setting in the summer?

Everyone’s comfort level is different, so the answer may vary from person to person.  That being said, a common rule of thumb is to set your thermostat to no lower than 72 degrees and set your system fan to AUTO vs. ON (which may significantly cut down the time your system will run).

When will my HVAC systems need to be replaced?

HVAC systems are improving every year.  The systems of today are significantly better/quieter/more efficient than those that are 10 years old.  If you are having issues with an older unit that is too noisy, requires frequent repair, or isn’t performing as well as you would like…it may be time to talk to the pros at Elite Air about replacing one or more of your HVAC products.

What is a Heat Pump?

Heat pumps provide an energy-efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioners. Similar to a refrigerator, heat pumps use electricity to transfer heat from a cooler space to a warmer space, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer. During the heating season, heat pumps move heat from the cool outdoors into your warm house. During the cooling season, heat pumps move heat from your house into the outdoors. As they do not generate heat, (they simply transfer it) heat pumps are a great option to efficiently provide comfortable temperatures in your home.

Should I consider an Air Purification System?

Many people underestimate the importance of their indoor air quality.  Pollutants, dust, mildew, allergens and other microscopic particles may be circulating throughout your home, contributing to more frequent illness, asthma and other health issues.

How do I program my thermostat?

Our technicians will program your thermostat for you and are here to answer any questions you may have.  Depending on the model you have selected, instructions may vary.  If you think it’s a simple operation question, simply add your model number to You Tube and you’ll find many tutorials.  If it is a more complex question, give us a call and we’ll be happy to help!

What is a HRV System?

An HRV stands for Heat Recovery Ventilator.  This device helps to make your home healthier, cleaner, and more comfortable by replacing stale (older) indoor air with fresh air from the outside.  The trend in home building in recent years has been to make homes more insulated and airtight…which yields improved energy efficiency, but may result in an excess buildup of moisture and/or stale air.  The system efficiently uses the heat in the stale indoor air to preheat the incoming fresh air.

Do I need a whole-house humidifier?

If you have wood floors, a whole-house humidifier is recommended (and may be required to qualify for any warranty work that is needed).  A consistent level of humidity can help prevent gapping in flooring products and also makes for an improved level of comfort throughout your home.
